The risks of developing complications are increased in patients who smoke compared to non-smokers. An increase in peripheral vascular disease, High Blood Pressure, Retinopathy , albuminuria , a decline in kidney function, Nerve disorders ( Neuropathy), Risk of stroke and Cardiac events are associated with smoking. In addition, an increase in insulin resistance is also observed in smokers.

The best exercises riding a bicycle and swimming. Avoid Walking or Jogging Activities and other activites which involve balance and weight bearing.

Any exercise that involves lifting weight or vigorous exercises should be avoided. Even Yoga is not recommended as it involves forward bending.

1) Having a pre-exercise snack, preferably carbohydrate (15 gms). 2) Drinking plenty of water at least 30 min before Exercise. 3) If on multiple doses of Insulin-lower the dosage prior to exercise to have blood sugars in safe range.

Go slow and gradually increase the time and effort. If required, share your plans with your doctor and go in for some Cardiac monitoring like ECG and 2 D Echo.
